General Information

This is a medium sized tree often grown along the roads. It has evergreen foliage consisting of many simple heart shaped leaves. It grows even in sandy soil in the coastal areas of tropical Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands. The handsome, bright yellow, deep cup-shaped flowers, with purple centre, are found throughout the year. They have the ability to withstand salty seawater and wind. They turn purple before they fall.

Uses and Medicinal Value

1. The wood is water resistant and is therefore good for boat building, also for rafters, beams, tools and musical instruments. The fresh wood smells like roses and, in the villages, the carved door frames are often made of this fine-grained termite resistant timber.

2. The flowers make a yellow dye.

3. The tree has a slimy gum which swells up in water.

4. The leaves can be lopped for animal fodder and manure.

5. Parts of this tree have a wide range of applications. The young buds and leaves can be eaten raw or fried along with the flowers.

6. The bark is astringent and can be used in dysentry.

7. The leaves are applied to inflamed joints.

8. Mashed it can be useful as a poultice or hot fomentation on wounds.

9. The fruit is active against bacteria and the juice helps skin diseases.

How to attain true and good Health

Here are some beautiful quotations from the Mother on the deeper and spiritual dimension of health.

"Health is the outer expression of a deep harmony; one must be proud of it and not despise it."

*

"Do not love your ill health and the ill health will leave you."

*

"Wake up in yourself a will to conquer. Not a mere will in the mind but a will in the cells of your body. Without that you can't do anything. You can take a hundred medicines but they won't cure you unless you have a will to overcome the physical illness…"

*

"Only when you become absolutely regular in your material life you will be able to have good health."

*

"Always be kind, stop engaging in bitter criticism, no longer see evil in anything, obstinately force yourself to see nothing but the benevolent presence of the Divine Grace, and you will see not only within you but also around you an atmosphere of quiet joy, peaceful trust spreading more and more. And not only will you feel quiet and happy, but most of your bodily ailments will disappear."

*

"I repeat. The time has come at last, not to rely any more on one's own petty will, to hand over the whole affair to the Divine's Will and to let It do Its work through you, not only through you mind and feelings, but mainly through the body - and if you do it sincerely, all this body nonsense will disappear and you will be strong and fit for your work."

- The Mother
