Beautiful blossoms, of fragrant
pink flowers in bunches, at the tip of branchlets rendering an eye-catching
sight that is 'Oleander', belonging to the Apocynaceae family. A
native of the Mediterranean, it is now widely grown in tropical
and subtropical gardens, parks, avenues, and is popular for its
hue and fragrance.
It rises up to 3 meters erect with
its short branches and dark dusty green leathery narrow leaves,
which grow in whorls. The plants are almost free from pests and
diseases and untouched by cattle and goats. There are single and
double forms in white, pink and crimson. The single variety has
five broad petals opening from a short tube to the inside of which
bands of stamens adhere and divide into several ragged segments.
The double variety grow in large
sprays so close to each other that the individual flowers cannot
be distinguished from each other.
Propagation and Medicinal
Value
The propagation of the plants is
by stem cuttings or by layerings although the plant produces brown
silky seeds in a narrow pod.
A paste from the root bark is a remedy for ring worms while the
sticky sap is used for leprosy and boils. The leaves boiled in oil
are also useful in curing skin diseases.
All parts of the plant are poisonous.
Root and root-bark are a powerful diuretic and cardiac tonic.
