1. Maha-Samadhi of Sri Aurobindo - 5 December 2010

Sri Aurobindo

Sri Aurobindo left his body on 5 December 1950. The Body was laid to rest in the Samadhi after four days, on 9 December 1950. The body did not show any sign of decay or decomposition during this period. A few saw a golden spiritual light around the body.

Our gratitude to the physical body of Sri Aurobindo was expressed by the Mother and has been inscribed on the Samadhi:

To Thee who hast been the material envelope of our Master, to Thee our infinite gratitude. Before Thee who hast done so much for us, who hast worked, struggled, suffered, hoped, endured so much, before Thee who hast willed all, attempted all, prepared, achieved all for us, before Thee we bow down and implore that we may never forget, even for a moment, all we owe to Thee.

On 5th December 2010, there will be meditation around the Samadhi at the Ashram in the morning, followed by a visit to Sri Aurobindo's Room. Meditation will also be held at the Playground in the evening. We give below a quote of the Mother on the significance of Sri Aurobindo's work and how we can participate in the birth of the New Creation:

Sri Aurobindo came upon earth to announce the manifestation of the supramental world and not merely did he announce this manifestation but embodied also in part the supramental force and showed by example what one must do to prepare oneself for manifesting it. The best thing we can do is to study all that he has told us and endeavour to follow his example and prepare ourselves for the new manifestation.
This gives life its real sense and will help us to overcome all obstacles.
Let us live for the new creation and we shall grow stronger and stronger by remaining young and progressive.

1. The Mother's Mahasamadhi day - 17th November 2010

The Mother's Mahasamadhi day was observed on 17th November 2010 with a visit to Her room and meditation at the Ashram in the morning and at the Playground in the evening. The message card distributed to devotees by the Ashram contained the following words of the Mother:

If at any time a deep sorrow, a searing doubt or an intense pain overwhelms you and drives you to despair, there is an infallible way to regain calm and peace.
In the depths of our being there shines a light whose brilliance is equalled only by its
purity; a light, a living and conscious portion of a universal godhead who animates and
nourishes and illumines Matter, a powerful and unfailing guide for those who are willing
to heed his law, a helper full of solace and loving forbearance towards all who aspire to
see and hear and obey him. No sincere and lasting aspiration towards him can be in
vain; no strong and respectful trust can be disappointed, no expectation ever deceived.

                                                                                                      The Mother

2. Siddhi Day - 24 November 2010

24th November 2010, was Darshan day of the anniversary of Sri Aurobindo's "Siddhi Day", or the Day of Victory, the Day of the descent of the Sri Krishna Consciousness or the Overmental Consciousness into the physical. It is also the day when the Sri Aurobindo Ashram came into being. The day was celebrated with quiet fervor, and message cards bearing the following words of Sri Aurobindo were distributed:
If mankind could but see though in a glimpse of fleeting experience what infinite enjoyments, what perfect forces, what luminous reaches of spontaneous knowledge, what wide calms of our being lie waiting for us in the tracts which our animal evolution has not yet conquered, they would leave all & never rest till they had gained these treasures.

                                                                                                                                Sri Aurobindo

3. 1 & 2 December 2010 Programmes

On 1st December 2010, the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education observed its 67th anniversary by presenting an inspiring and dramatic performance at the Ashram Theatre titled: "The Voice of the New Creation". The play was an attempt to evoke the spiritual ascent of Ashwapati as described in the third book of Sri Aurobindo's Savitri, beginning with

"In the unapproachable stillness of his soul,
      Intense, one-pointed, monumental, lone,
… Motionless on a pedestal of prayer."

and culminating in a vision of the Supreme and a boon by which "A seed shall be sown in Death's tremendous hour". Through music, dance, light and colours, and especially the collective aspiration of all those involved, the programme managed to depict and create the magic atmosphere of Ashwapati's marvelously powerful spiritual experience in which
"None was apart, none lived for himself alone,
Each lived for God in him and God in all,
      … There was no sob of suffering anywhere;
Experience ran from point to point of joy:
Bliss was the pure undying truth of things."

The Ashram's Department of Physical Education held a physical demonstration at the Ashram's Sports ground on 2nd December 2010. The programme, on the theme "Awakening of the Body Consciousness", began with the March Past and Vande Mataram and included Bubbles of Joy, The Beautiful Game, Ladders of Self-Transcendence, Gymnastics, Wings of Awakening, Colours of Fantasy, New Life's Doors, Odyssey and ended with the National Anthem.

Some Special Days in December 2010

25th December 2010 - Christmas

Christmas Eve

The Christmas day has been celebrated in the Ashram for many decades. Once the Mother was asked by a devotee about the special meaning of the Christmas day as celebrated in the Ashram, and here is the Mother's response:

Long before the Christian religion made December 25th the day of Christ's birth, this day was the festival of the return of the sun, the Day of Light. It is this very ancient symbol of the rebirth of the Light that we wish to celebrate here.

Here is a Christmas Message from the Mother:

May the New Light illumine your thoughts and your lives, govern your hearts and guide your action.
      Blessings.
