STUDY: EFFICACY OF MUSIC THERAPY (INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC) IN PATIENTS WITH
HYPERTENSION / ISCHAEMIC HEART DISEASE WITH ANXIETY NEUROSIS
Though
the therapeutic values of music have been recognized and employed from a
very early stage in the history of mankind, not enough work has been carried
out scientifically to evaluate the efficacy of traditional Indian classical
music in healing various ailments. Music is known to alleviate both acute
and chronic ailments because of the efficacy of sound vibrations in
affecting the mental and emotional states and in producing multiple
physiological changes in the body.
A pilot project was conducted by Dr. P. Bharati, a physiologist and
musician, who after a detailed literature survey selected 2 ragas: Raga Todi
and Subhapanthuvarali for study. These were played to 25 people with
hypertension and anxiety neurosis with beneficial results larger study is
now being planned.
