MAPPING MEDICINAL FLORA IN THE PONDICHERRY CITY

We realised (as we contemplated starting work on medicinal plants) that the flora of Pondicherry had only been studied in 1961. So we started mapping the wild flora of the city precincts. We were able to discover many important Ayurvedic herbs. It was interesting to see that a 20 sq cm of land had at least 25 different medicinal herbs. Even when the municipality cleared away these apparently wild plants - they sprang up again.
